Swim in Guilt
(Rule 9)

Swim in Guilt This rule requires little or no explanation. Where would Misery be without guilt?

How would we know how to discipline our children, let alone ourselves, if it weren't for guilt? Guilt destroys many lives.

It is subtle and generally goes undetected for years and feels more like a mild annoyance than the destroyer it is. It's a favorite rule… one of Misery's most popular.

Whether you are trying to control yourself or someone else is working hard to control you, there are lots of should haves, could haves, or ought tos involved.

Those heavy, ingrained feelings of duty, obligation, and responsibility build relentlessly.

They become ominous foreboding emotions, sort of like waiting for a tornado to touch down.
